The piece we did for the “Dutch Darling competition” SAIL ALONG you can still vote for us! if you are at the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven please vote for us:) (at the Klokgebouw, the Dutch Darling stand) SAIL ALONG is a ceramic and wood souvenir boat, candleholder. This is a collaborative project between Jonathan Cao and Kesem Yahav. As a couple – one cabinetmaker and the other a ceramic designer, it was natural to combine these different media together, the wood and the ceramic. How we came up with this idea – Sail Boats have a natural beauty and craftsmanship in their shape; Jonathan’s background in boat building drew us to incorporate it in our design. Ceramic being an old Dutch tradition completed the connection between us and Dutch craftsmanship. The Story behind the design – We designed a souvenir based on a traditional Dutch craft, Our design got inspiration from the Botter, The Botter is an old Dutch fishing boat, originated in the 2nd half of the 18th century, built primarily from oak. The Botter is perhaps the best known of all Dutch boats and is considered to be beautiful because of its wide tall bow and narrow low rear. About the design – The souvenir is made from oak and white glazed ceramic with handmade decoration; we designed and made the piece our self. We have made a geometrical simplification of the boat shape, giving it a new look that can reach a big audience. The interaction between the two materials creates a unique design, which highlights the contrast of the materials, texture, color and shape, while creating a surprising new harmonious fusion. This symbiotic relationship maintains a clean, refined aesthetic into a unified and unique design.
